Overview
PollPulse is built on transparency. This Privacy Policy explains what data we collect, why we collect it, how we use it, and the choices you have. We do not sell your personal data to advertisers or third parties.
By using PollPulse, you agree to the data practices described in this policy. If you have questions, please reach out via our contact channels.
Information We Collect
Account Information
When you create an account, we collect your email address, password (hashed — never stored in plain text), and the username you choose. This information is required to operate your account.
Extension & Usage Data
When you use the extension, we collect the URLs of pages where you create or interact with polls (to associate polls with pages). We also collect your vote responses, XP earned, polls completed, and reward history to maintain your account state.
When you click "Create Vote", the extension reads the visible text content of the active tab (headline, title, or page text) solely to generate a relevant poll question. This content is sent to our servers for question generation and is not stored beyond the duration of that request.
Creator Information
If you apply to become a Creator, we collect the information you provide in your application (name, email, reason, social links, company). Approved Creators' poll content is stored to serve polls to users.
Payment Information
All payments are processed by Stripe. We do not store your payment card details. We receive confirmation of payment and a transaction reference from Stripe. Stripe's privacy policy governs how your payment data is handled.
How We Use Your Information
- To operate, maintain, and improve the PollPulse platform.
- To display your votes, XP, levels, and earned rewards in the extension.
- To associate polls with web pages so other users can find and vote on them.
- To calculate and credit referral earnings to eligible Creators.
- To send essential service communications (e.g., email verification, security notices).
- To detect and prevent fraud, abuse, or violations of our Terms of Service.
- To analyze aggregate, anonymized trends to improve the platform.
We do not use your data for advertising profiling, and we do not sell or rent personal data to third parties.
Anonymized Poll Responses
When you answer a poll created by a Creator, your response is recorded anonymously. Creators receive aggregate, anonymized results only — they cannot identify who gave any particular answer. Your username and identity are never disclosed to Creators.
Public votes (votes on web pages visible in the /votes feed) show that a vote exists on a page and its aggregate results. Individual voter identities are not displayed.
Data Retention
We retain your account data for as long as your account is active. If you request account deletion, we will delete or anonymize your personal data within 30 days, except where we are legally required to retain certain records (e.g., payment transaction records for tax compliance).
Anonymized, aggregated poll response data may be retained indefinitely for platform analytics.
Cookies & Local Storage
The PollPulse extension uses Chrome's chrome.storage.local to store your authentication token and preferences locally on your device. This data never leaves your browser except as part of authenticated API requests to our servers.
Our website (pollpulse.ca) may use minimal session-based cookies for authentication. We do not use tracking or advertising cookies.
Third-Party Services
- Stripe — payment processing for Creator poll purchases. Governed by Stripe's Privacy Policy.
- Vercel — hosting and edge functions. May process request logs.
- Neon (PostgreSQL) — database hosting for user and poll data.
We select third-party providers who meet high standards for data security and privacy. We do not share personal data with third parties beyond what is necessary to operate the Service.
Your Rights & Choices
Depending on your location, you may have rights including:
- Access — Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
- Correction — Request correction of inaccurate data.
- Deletion — Request deletion of your account and personal data.
- Portability — Request your data in a portable format.
- Opt-out — Opt out of non-essential communications.
To exercise any of these rights, contact us through the support channels listed below. We will respond within 30 days.
Children's Privacy
PollPulse is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If we discover that a child under 13 has provided us with personal data, we will delete it promptly. If you believe a child has registered, please contact us.
Security
We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your personal data against unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction. These include encrypted data transmission (HTTPS), hashed passwords, and restricted access to production databases.
No system is 100% secure. We encourage you to use a strong, unique password for your PollPulse account.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be communicated via email or an in-app notice. The "last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision. Continued use of the Service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance.
Privacy Questions
If you have questions, concerns, or requests regarding your privacy or this policy, email us directly at support@pollpulse.ca or reach out via the suggestions form on our website. We aim to respond within 5 business days.
